And God Laughed

I’m going to go here.

I’m going to do that.

I make assumptions.

I know when it’s time

To investigate something new.

Usually that knowing

Is precipitated by a necessity.

High school…done!

Job…ending!

Bills…mounting!

That kind of thing.

But then

I get my instructions,

Fly this way.

I eagerly take to the skies,

Thinking

I know what it’s going to look like.

And God laughs.

Not at me exactly.

I know He loves me

And has my best in mind.

He simply laughs

Because I think I know His plans.

Believe me,

Sometimes, I’m totally clueless.

I’m going to college to get a degree,

Not a husband.

And God laughed.

I’m going to work

Evenings and weekends

At the mall.

And God laughed.

I’m going to flip burgers

Because it’s my turn

To do what has to be done.

And God laughed.

I’m joining the gym

Only to be my daughter’s workout partner.

And God laughed.

I’ve thought of becoming a midwife.

And God laughed.

I’m going to the writers’ conference

Simply to encourage my daughter.

And God laughed.

Surprise!

Awe!

Wonder!

Because I take to the skies,

And then,

Bit by bit,

My Guide shows me why

He laughed.

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you” (Jeremiah 29:11-12, ESV).
