Words Give Wings

The tendrils of hurtful words

Wrapped themselves

Around my mind.

I couldn’t go for

Any length of time

Without replaying them

Over and over.

They haunted me.

They had such a firm grip

I couldn’t even think

Of taking to the skies.

I tried.

What can I learn from this?

How can I make it better?

My efforts failed,

At least my efforts

To make it better.

I am,

On the other hand,

One of the biggest breakthroughs,

Came because of

A simple phrase.

The woman who

Spoke the words

Had no idea

They would give me wings.

My heart grew lighter.

The tendrils began to retract.

Is there still more to learn?

And one of the main things

Is a reminder

That with my words,

I can create bondage

Set others free.

May I choose my word carefully

Today and every day.

The tongue has the power of life and death (Proverbs 18:21, NIV).
