Learning to Fly

You know what’s even better

Than soaring?

Watching others take wing

And fly

Higher and higher and higher.

I went to a banquet.

I heard how young people

Have no hope

And wonder, “Why bother?”

And it brought

Tears to my eyes.

I heard how others

Were learning to fly

And that, too,

Caused me to get weepy.

There are

Of young people

Without a sense of purpose

Or a sense of worth.

It is not our job…

It is not my job…

To convince them

They are valuable.

It is my responsibility,

And that of others,

To direct them

To the One

Who gives us wings.

Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God (John 1:12, NIV).
