Be Yourself

Can a hummingbird

Soar to great heights

And impress us

With its majesty?

Well, no.

Can an eagle

Hover by the feeder

And delight us

With its colours

And its tiny body

Held aloft

By a blur of motion?

The answer is no.

How about the bee?

Does it flit from

Flower to flower

On delicate wings,

Making our hearts light

By just watching?

On the flip side,

Does a butterfly

Live in a community

Where each does its part?

Collecting nectar?

Producing honey?

Caring for the young?

No, no, and again, no.

My point?

We must all

Be ourselves.

I cannot accomplish

What you’re intended to do.

Neither can I count on

Someone else

To do

What I know I should.

Let’s have a wonderful year,

Being the best

Each of us can be.

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do (Ephesians 2:10, NIV).
