My Altimeter

Childhood insecurities

Just being human?

Whatever it is,

My heart always takes flight

When I learn that

Someone likes me.

If I make them laugh

Or smile

Or feel safe enough

To take me into their confidence…

I feel lighter and lighter,

Like a helium balloon.

And yet…

Being liked

Can’t be my altimeter.

There is something

Far more important.

Am I accomplishing

My unique purposes?

When I use my gifts and abilities

To share Truth

And genuinely help others,

The view will be incredible.

Does it still matter to me

What people think?

Of course.

But that can’t be

What charts my course.

We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might… (Colossians 1:9-11, NIV).
