Safe Landing

What lessons can I learn

From hang gliding?

I’m sure if I actually did it…

Something I considered

This year…

I’m sure I’d learn

Many lessons.

For now,

I’m just going to mull it over

From right here,

Safe on Terra Firma.

I guess that’s the first lesson.

I’m in no danger

Sitting here safe

As merely an observer.

But neither will I experience

The beauty or the thrill

That comes from soaring.

That’s the way of it with life.

If I want to experience

The upside of flight,

I have to accept the risks

And get out there.

The view,

I’m sure,

Is breathtaking.

Even though

I can observe

The photos or the video,

It’s just not the same.

Hang gliders know

As well as anyone

What it means to ride the currents.

They have a measure of control,

But they have to know

What factors are and aren’t

Subject to their efforts.

That I would remember that!

While I must fly as diligently

And with as much effort

As I can summon

In the direction

I believe I should go.

There are things

That are out of my hands.

The hang glider

Must find a safe place

To put down

Should she end up

Somewhere other

Than her chosen destination.

And me…

If I know I’m off course

And there is something to be done,

I must.

If, however,

As is so often the case,

I discover there are

Currents, updrafts, and downdrafts

Too strong for navigation,

I must trust

The Controller of the Elements.

One hundred percent,

There will be

A safe landing spot ahead…

Even if it isn’t visible

From my vantage point.

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will (Romans 12:2 NIV).
